Yahoo's Site Builder and Site Solution

If you're having trouble embedding a pdf file in Yahoo's Site Builder software, you might want to try Yahoo's Site Solution for your site. Back in May, 2011, my Site Builder crashed and burned. I had to move to Site Solution. I think the problem was my 64 bit computer. Site Builder was fine with the 32 bit. I've gotten used to it, but there are some limitations. It's VERY easy to pop a pdf file in. It's as easy as linking to any document file.

Where Are All the Great Librarian Blogs

There used to be so many great blogs done by librarians. Why did they all disappear? There are still a few favorites, and the links are over on the right.
Did their jobs get cut? I can't figure out why public librarians are so poorly compensated.
Boards of public libraries expect a 60 hour work week for about 20 hours worth of compensation. I can't figure out why boards of most non-profit organizations even exist. Mostly, they just ruin the non-profit they oversee.

Yahoo's Site Solution - Audio Files!

So, I'm getting used to Yahoo's Site Solution. It does have some nice features, but the restrictions can be annoying. It keeps switching back to the default font - Times New Roman. The page layout keeps changing on me. Lots of clicks.

The organization whose site I maintain has a bunch of audio files they want online. I thought it would be easy to just pop them onto Site Solution. There's a page template just for audio. Great! They have to be .mp3s, and mine are .wavs. Off I went to find a file converter. At CNET, I chose Switch File Converter. Free to try, $19.99 to buy, and it had 4.5 stars from CNET's editors. It worked like a charm. The three wav files were mp3s in no time. Back to Site Solution to put them on the Audio File Gallery page. I don't remember seeing anything about a 10MB size limit, but that's what it is, and mine are each at least 25MB.
Bummer. Back to the drawing board.

Not Amy Dobek

I am not Amy Dobek. Why is she using my email address? How is it even possible?
I get too much mail meant for her. I usually write back to the sender to let them know they've got the wrong email, but it's getting tiresome. I just deleted a whole bunch.
Amy, I hope you haven't missed anything important, like rehearsals, mail from your new doctor, etc. Please check your email address when you're giving it to people.

Books Read in 2010

I know I read more than these, but apparently, these are the only ones I jotted down.
How lazy of me. Lots of board books, tho. We love Sandra Boynton.
I wonder when Katie Hafner will come out with another book. Love hers.

Yahoo SiteBuilder Crashed

I can't believe it has been so long since I've posted. It must be all the farming and babysitting.

Anyway, about Yahoo's SiteBuilder and embedding a PDF.
I've been maintaining a site for a few years using SiteBuilder. When I went to Windows 7, I'd often get a message from SiteBuilder saying it had just recovered from a serious error. I didn't pay much attention because everything would load ok. One day, SiteBuilder totally crashed. I called Yahoo and was told that there were compatibility issues with SiteBuilder and Windows 7, and that they weren't going to address them. They're encouraging everyone to move to Site Solution. I had a fit. I tried uninstalling and starting with a fresh SiteBuilder. No luck, so I had no choice but to start over using Site Solution. At first, I didn't like it. You have to use a template. There are restrictions with layouts. But, there are some great features, especially the PDF issue. It pops a PDF into the site with one click. It's also web based, so you don't have to download any software program. I'm glad I was forced to make the switch, otherwise, I'd still be muddling around with SiteBuilder.

Chloe Died

Little Chloe died this afternoon. She was seventeen years old. This photo was taken a few days before she moved on. We spent some time in the garden. It tired her out, but she did enjoy being with the catnip once more. She was the nicest, prettiest, smartest cat ever.
